Post & Rail Fencing

Also commonly known as ‘Sussex Rail Fencing’ — a traditional and rustic form of fencing using chestnut morticed posts and hand-split rails.

What it is

Chestnut Post & Rail Fencing, also commonly known as Sussex rail fencing, is a traditional, handcrafted fencing style made from naturally rot-resistant chestnut. Featuring morticed posts and hand-split rails, this system delivers rustic charm, long-term performance, and low maintenance. Ideal for gardens, paddocks, or heritage estates, it offers a visually pleasing and eco-friendly alternative to conventional fencing. Lasting a long time with minimal upkeep, it’s a sustainable boundary solution that ages with grace and strength.

This style of fencing can be installed in 2-Rail or 3-Rail variations.

Why choose post & rail fencing

  • Durability & Performance – Chestnut is a hardwood which is rich in natural tannins, providing outstanding rot resistance and longevity, often lasting 20 to 40 years in UK climates, typically without pressure treatment
  • Rustic Elegance – Thanks to the organic grain, curved rail profile, and bark coating, this fencing offers a beautifully rustic, handcrafted appearance that blends organically with countryside and garden settings.
  • Sustainability – Produced from sustainably managed coppiced woodlands within the UK, sources in Kent and Sussex contribute to low-carbon footprints and eco-responsible forestry.
  • Minimal Maintenance – With no chemical treatment necessary, chestnut fences require no ongoing treatment, occasional visual checks may be all that’s needed over time.

I had three quotes from different businesses and the prices were all pretty similar, but I instantly liked Matt when he came out to assess the job. He gave me real confidence that I’d be in safe hands. I paid the deposit, and on the day of the work the team arrived early, worked hard all day, and delivered a stunning result. I’m genuinely pleased I found them, and they’ll be top of my list next time I need any fencing done.

I was recommended to Fencecraft by my neighbour who had a new rear boundary last year. Sometimes recommendations do not work out but I could not have been more pleased with Fencecraft. Chris and Matt were polite, efficient and extremely professional. They arrived exactly as planned, worked throughout the day without a break and on completion they ensured that everything was tidy and clean and left a very satisfied customer with a stunning fence. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Fencecraft has installed a bespoke, hit and miss fence on a tricky slope position for us. They came recommended thus we were expecting a quality product, but the final result exceeded our expectations. Their attention to detail and craftsmanship has produced a beautifully finished yet very sturdy fence. They are serious, reliable, and genuinely nice guys. Highly recommended!

Matt and Chris have replaced a couple of dilapidate fences for us now. The service and the fences themselves have been excellent on both occasions. Their quotes are accurate, they turn up when agreed and the end product is as promised, with all rubbish removed and the site cleared when they leave. Very happy to use them again and have no reservation in recommending them to friends and family.

Chris and Matt have done a fabulous job fencing our garden to ensure it is dog friendly and secure. They were both very reliable, courteous and extremely skilled at what they do. I would certainly have them back to do anything further that we may like.
